Before bitcoin

  1. Diffie-Hellman key exchange

    Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman publish a way for two parties to agree on a shared secret over an open channel. The paper starts public-key cryptography, the basis of the key pairs that crypto wallets hold.[494]

  2. RSA public-key system

    Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir and Leonard Adleman describe RSA, a public-key system for encryption and digital signatures that rests on the difficulty of factoring large numbers.[495]

  3. Merkle's hash-tree signatures

    Ralph Merkle files a US patent for digital signatures built from a tree of hashes, granted on 5 January 1982. Bitcoin blocks use a Merkle tree to summarise all their transactions in one hash.[496]

  4. Chaum's blind signatures

    David Chaum presents blind signatures, which let a bank sign a digital coin without seeing it, so the coin can be spent without tracing it to the person who withdrew it.[497]

  5. DigiCash and ecash

    David Chaum founds DigiCash to sell ecash, anonymous digital money built on blind signatures. By 1998 it has 5,000 users and 300 merchants, and it files for bankruptcy that year.[498][499]

  6. Cypherpunks mailing list

    Eric Hughes, Timothy C. May and John Gilmore start the Cypherpunks group in the San Francisco Bay Area and its mailing list, which has 700 subscribers by 1994. Many ideas behind Bitcoin are first argued there.[500]

  7. A Cypherpunk's Manifesto

    Eric Hughes publishes A Cypherpunk's Manifesto, arguing that privacy in an open society needs anonymous transaction systems.[501]

  8. Hashcash proof of work

    Adam Back announces hashcash on the cypherpunks list: a sender proves effort by finding a partial hash collision, which is costly to make and instant to check. Bitcoin mining uses the same proof-of-work idea.[502][503]

  9. b-money

    Wei Dai posts b-money, a design for anonymous electronic cash in which participants keep the ledger and create money by solving computational problems. The Bitcoin white paper cites it as its first reference.[504][493]

  10. Bit gold

    Nick Szabo writes up bit gold, a chain of proof-of-work puzzles whose solutions are time-stamped and owned through a registry. He first proposed it in 1998.[505]

Genesis

  1. Bitcoin white paper

    Satoshi Nakamoto sends 'Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System' to the Cryptography mailing list: a 9-page design for digital cash with no bank, using proof of work to order transactions.[506][493]

  2. Genesis block

    Nakamoto mines block 0 at 18:15:05 UTC with a reward of 50 BTC. Its coinbase text quotes a Times headline: 'Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks'.[507][508]

  3. First bitcoin transaction

    Hal Finney receives 10 BTC from Nakamoto in block 170, the first transfer of bitcoin between two people.[509][508]

  4. Bitcoin Pizza Day

    Laszlo Hanyecz pays 10,000 BTC for two pizzas, the first widely cited purchase of goods with bitcoin. He posts the offer on 18 May and confirms the trade on 22 May.[510]

  1. Litecoin

    Charlie Lee announces Litecoin, 'a lite version of Bitcoin', one of the first coins built from Bitcoin's code.[511]

Genesis

  1. First halving

    Block 210,000 cuts the new-coin reward per block from 50 BTC to 25 BTC. Halvings repeat every 210,000 blocks, about every four years.[512]

  2. Silk Road shut down

    The FBI arrests Ross Ulbricht in San Francisco and closes Silk Road, a dark-web drug market that took bitcoin, seizing roughly 26,000 BTC.[513][514]

Altcoins

  1. Dogecoin

    Dogecoin, a coin named after the 'doge' dog meme, is announced on Bitcointalk.[515]

Genesis

  1. Mt. Gox collapse

    Mt. Gox, then the largest bitcoin exchange, files for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo after reporting about 850,000 BTC missing. In March it says it found 199,999.99 BTC in an old wallet, cutting the loss to about 650,000 BTC.[516][517][518]

Altcoins

  1. Realcoin, later Tether

    A Santa Monica startup announces Realcoin, a token meant to hold a steady value of one US dollar. It issues the first tokens on 6 October 2014 on the Bitcoin blockchain and renames itself Tether on 20 November 2014.[519]

  2. Ethereum launches

    Ethereum's Frontier release goes live. Conceived by Vitalik Buterin in a 2013 white paper, it adds programs (smart contracts) that run on the blockchain itself.[520][521]

  3. The DAO hack

    An attacker uses a flaw in The DAO, an Ethereum-based investment fund that had raised the equivalent of $120 million, to move out about one-third of its funds, then worth about $50 million.[522][523]

  4. Second halving

    Block 420,000 cuts the block reward from 25 BTC to 12.5 BTC.[524]

  5. Ethereum hard fork after The DAO

    Ethereum changes its rules to return The DAO's funds. The unchanged chain carries on as Ethereum Classic.[525][526]

The ICO wave

  1. SEC report on The DAO

    The US Securities and Exchange Commission finds that DAO tokens were securities, signalling that tokens sold in initial coin offerings (ICOs) can fall under securities law.[527]

  2. Bitcoin Cash split and SegWit

    After a dispute over block size, Bitcoin Cash splits from Bitcoin after block 478,558 and starts trading near $240 while bitcoin is near $2,700. SegWit, a soft fork that moves signature data out of the base block, activates on 24 August at block 481,824.[528][529][530]

  3. China bans ICOs

    China's central bank bans ICO fundraising and orders platforms to refund investors.[531]

  4. CryptoKitties and the NFT standard

    CryptoKitties launches on Ethereum using an early form of ERC-721, the standard for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), tokens that are each unique.[532]

  5. Bitcoin tops $20,000

    At the height of the ICO boom bitcoin reaches $20,089 intraday on CoinMarketCap data, up from under $1,000 at the start of 2017.[5]

  6. Coincheck hack

    Hackers take about 500 million NEM tokens, worth about $530 million, from Tokyo exchange Coincheck. Japan's regulator orders checks across the industry.[533][534]

  7. Bitkub founded

    Jirayut Srupsrisopa founds Bitkub in Bangkok with registered capital of 50 million baht. In January 2019 it is one of the first four exchanges licensed by the Thai SEC, with Bx, Coins and Satang Pro.[535][536]

  8. Thailand's digital asset decree

    Thailand's Emergency Decree on Digital Asset Businesses B.E. 2561 (2018), given on 10 May 2018, takes effect the day after its Royal Gazette publication. It requires SEC licences for digital asset exchanges, brokers and dealers, and covers token offerings.[537][538]

  9. USDC launches

    Circle and Coinbase launch USD Coin (USDC), a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, through their joint Centre consortium.[539][540]

  10. Crypto winter bottom

    Bitcoin falls to $3,191 (CoinMarketCap daily low), about 84% below its December 2017 high.[5]

  11. Facebook announces Libra

    Facebook announces Libra, a planned global stablecoin, with a wallet called Calibra. Regulators push back; renamed Diem, the project shuts down in January 2022 and its assets go to Silvergate.[541][542]

DeFi and NFTs

  1. Third halving

    Block 630,000 cuts the block reward from 12.5 BTC to 6.25 BTC.[543]

  2. DeFi summer

    Compound, a lending protocol, starts paying its COMP token to lenders and borrowers, setting off a rush into decentralized finance (DeFi): lending and trading apps that run as smart contracts.[544][545]

  3. MicroStrategy buys bitcoin

    Software firm MicroStrategy (now Strategy) buys 21,454 BTC for $250 million and makes bitcoin its main treasury reserve asset, the start of company bitcoin treasuries.[546]

  4. Beeple NFT sells for $69.3 million

    Christie's sells Beeple's NFT artwork 'Everydays: the First 5000 Days' for $69.3 million.[547][548]

  5. El Salvador makes bitcoin legal tender

    El Salvador's Legislative Assembly votes 62 of 84 to make bitcoin legal tender. The law takes effect on 7 September 2021; the government buys 400 BTC, worth about $20.9 million, the day before.[549][550]

  6. 2021 bitcoin peak

    Bitcoin reaches $68,789.63 intraday on CoinMarketCap data, the high of the 2020-2021 cycle.[5]

  7. Taproot activates

    The Taproot soft fork activates at block 709,632, adding Schnorr signatures and cheaper, more private complex spending rules.[551][552]

The crashes

  1. Thailand bars crypto as payment

    Thailand's SEC bars licensed digital asset businesses from offering crypto as payment for goods and services from 1 April 2022; trading and holding stay legal. Thais' digital asset holdings stand at 114.5 billion baht, up from 9.6 billion baht two years earlier.[553]

  2. Terra and LUNA collapse

    TerraUSD, an algorithmic stablecoin, loses its dollar peg and its sister token LUNA collapses, wiping out almost $45 billion of market value in a week.[554][555]

  3. Celsius freezes withdrawals

    Crypto lender Celsius pauses all withdrawals and transfers, citing 'extreme market conditions', and files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 13 July 2022.[556][557]

  4. Zipmex freezes withdrawals

    Zipmex, a Singapore-based exchange with a large Thai business, suspends withdrawals, citing $53 million of exposure to troubled partners Babel Finance and Celsius. Thai withdrawals resume late the same day except from one investment product.[489]

  5. The Merge

    Ethereum switches from proof-of-work mining to proof of stake. Its energy use drops by an estimated 99.95%.[558]

  6. FTX bankruptcy

    A 2 November CoinDesk report on Alameda Research's balance sheet sets off about $6 billion of withdrawals from FTX in 72 hours. On 11 November FTX, Alameda and over 100 affiliates file for bankruptcy.[559][560][561]

  7. 2022 bitcoin low

    Bitcoin falls to $15,599 (CoinMarketCap daily low), about 77% below its November 2021 high.[5]

  8. USDC loses its peg

    Circle says $3.3 billion of USDC's reserves sit at the failed Silicon Valley Bank. USDC trades below $1 and regains its peg four days later.[540][562]

Institutions

  1. Gulf Binance licensed in Thailand

    Gulf Binance, a joint venture of Thailand's Gulf group and Binance, receives Ministry of Finance licences to run a digital asset exchange and brokerage under SEC supervision. It trades as Binance TH, with baht trading pairs.[563][564]

  2. EU MiCA regulation

    The EU publishes the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (EU) 2023/1114. Stablecoin rules apply from 30 June 2024 and the rest, including licences for crypto-asset service providers, from 30 December 2024.[565][566]

The crashes

  1. Binance pleads guilty

    Binance pleads guilty to anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations and agrees to pay over $4 billion; founder Changpeng Zhao pleads guilty and steps down as CEO.[567]

Institutions

  1. US spot bitcoin ETFs approved

    The SEC approves listing and trading of spot bitcoin exchange-traded products, with staff reviewing registration statements for 10 funds at once.[568]

  2. Bitcoin passes its 2021 high

    Bitcoin reaches $73,750.07 (CoinMarketCap intraday high), its first record since 2021, as the new US spot ETFs see record inflows.[5][508]

  3. Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced

    FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, convicted in November 2023, is sentenced to 25 years in prison.[569]

  4. Fourth halving

    Block 840,000, mined at 00:09 UTC, cuts the block reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC.[570]

  5. US spot ether ETFs start trading

    Spot ether funds from issuers including Grayscale, Bitwise, iShares and VanEck begin trading, after the SEC approves the exchange rules on 23 May 2024.[571][572]

  6. Bitcoin passes $100,000

    Bitcoin trades above $100,000 for the first time, reaching $103,900 on CoinMarketCap data.[5]

Now

  1. Thailand's crypto gains tax holiday

    Thailand exempts individuals' capital gains on crypto sold through SEC-licensed Thai exchanges, brokers and dealers from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2029 (Ministerial Regulation No. 399). Income from mining, staking and airdrops, and trades on foreign or unlicensed platforms, fall outside it.[573][574]

  2. $TRUMP meme coin

    Donald Trump launches the $TRUMP meme coin on Solana three days before his inauguration. 200 million of 1 billion tokens go to the public; Trump-linked companies hold the other 800 million, and by 19 January the token's market value tops $9 billion.[575][576]

  3. Ross Ulbricht pardoned

    Trump grants Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht a full and unconditional pardon after 11 years of a life sentence.[577][578]

  4. US executive order on digital assets

    An executive order creates the President's Working Group on Digital Asset Markets, gives it 180 days to propose a federal framework, and bars US agencies from creating a central bank digital currency (CBDC).[579]

  5. El Salvador rolls back its bitcoin law

    El Salvador's Congress votes 55-2 to make accepting bitcoin voluntary for businesses, a condition of a $1.4 billion IMF loan deal.[580][581]

  6. Bybit hack

    Hackers take about $1.5 billion in ether from Dubai-based exchange Bybit, the largest crypto theft on record. The FBI attributes it to North Korea's 'TraderTraitor' group, also called Lazarus.[582]

  7. US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve

    Executive Order 14233 sets up a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and a Digital Asset Stockpile, filled with coins forfeited in criminal and civil cases, and states that reserve bitcoin 'shall not be sold'.[583]

  8. Circle goes public

    Circle, issuer of USDC, lists on the New York Stock Exchange as CRCL after pricing 34 million shares at $31.[584]

  9. GENIUS Act signed

    Trump signs the GENIUS Act (S. 1582), the first US federal law for payment stablecoins, after the Senate (68-30, 17 June) and House (308-122, 17 July) pass it. The act bars issuers from paying yield to holders. On 17 July the House also passes the CLARITY market-structure bill, 294-134.[585][9][586]

  10. TouristDigiPay

    Thailand launches TouristDigiPay, a sandbox that lets foreign visitors convert crypto to baht through licensed firms and pay by e-wallet. Spending is capped at 50,000 baht a month at small vendors and 500,000 baht at vendors that complete merchant checks, for up to 18 months.[67]

  11. Ether passes its 2021 record

    Ether reaches $4,946 on CoinGecko data ($4,953.73 on CoinMarketCap), its first record since November 2021.[587][6]

  12. Stablecoins pass $300 billion

    Dollar stablecoins in circulation pass $300 billion in early October 2025, up from about $205 billion at the start of the year.[588][586]

  13. Bitcoin all-time high

    Bitcoin reaches $126,198.07 on CoinMarketCap ($126,080 on CoinGecko), its all-time high as of September 2026, with a market value near $2.5 trillion.[5][589]

  14. Record $19 billion liquidation

    After Trump threatens an extra 100% tariff on Chinese goods, more than $19 billion of margin positions are force-closed and more than 1.6 million traders liquidated, the largest liquidation Coinglass has recorded. Bitcoin's range that day runs from $122,510 down to $104,582 (CoinMarketCap).[590][591][5]

  15. Prince Group sanctions and 127,271 BTC

    The US and UK sanction Cambodia's Prince Group and its chairman Chen Zhi over scam compounds, and US prosecutors move to forfeit 127,271 BTC, worth over $14 billion, the largest crypto seizure action to date.[592][593]

  16. Changpeng Zhao pardoned

    Trump pardons Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, who pleaded guilty in 2023 and served four months in prison in 2024.[594]

  17. First US spot Solana ETF

    Bitwise's BSOL starts trading on the NYSE, the first US fund holding SOL directly, and it stakes its holdings.[595]

  18. Do Kwon sentenced

    A Manhattan federal judge sentences Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon to 15 years in prison over the TerraUSD and LUNA collapse, which wiped out an estimated $40 billion.[596][597]

  19. Chen Zhi sent to China

    Cambodia arrests Prince Group chairman Chen Zhi on 6 January with two associates and extradites him to China.[598]

  20. Bitcoin falls to $60,000

    Bitcoin drops to $60,074 (CoinMarketCap daily low), about 52% below its October 2025 record, after a 15% one-day fall.[5][599]

  21. Quantum-resistant BIP-360 merged

    BIP-360, Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), enters the Bitcoin BIPs repository as a draft. It proposes an optional new output type without Taproot's key-path spend, so coins in it are not exposed to a future quantum computer through a visible public key. It is a proposal, not an activated rule.[600][601]

  22. GENIUS Act rules proposed

    The OCC proposes rules to carry out the GENIUS Act for stablecoin issuers it oversees, with comments due 1 May 2026. The act takes effect 18 months after enactment or 120 days after final rules, whichever comes first.[602][603]

  23. Google cuts quantum estimate for crypto keys

    Google Quantum AI estimates that breaking the 256-bit elliptic-curve cryptography behind Bitcoin and Ethereum signatures needs fewer than 1,200-1,450 logical qubits, or fewer than 500,000 physical qubits running for a few minutes: about 20 times fewer physical qubits than earlier estimates.[604][605]

  24. Drift Protocol hack

    Attackers drain $285 million from Drift, a Solana trading protocol, after a months-long operation that combines social engineering, oracle manipulation and a governance attack to take admin control. TRM Labs links it to North Korea.[606]

  25. Hong Kong's first stablecoin licences

    The Hong Kong Monetary Authority grants the first stablecoin issuer licences under the Stablecoins Ordinance, to Anchorpoint Financial (a Standard Chartered joint venture) and HSBC.[607][608]

  26. Kelp DAO bridge exploit

    An attacker forges a cross-chain message to Kelp DAO's LayerZero bridge and takes 116,500 rsETH, about $292 million and about 18% of the token's supply, stranding wrapped rsETH on 20+ chains.[609]

  27. MiCA transition ends

    The EU's transitional period for crypto firms under MiCA ends. Firms without MiCA authorisation must stop serving EU clients; ESMA says a pending application does not count.[610]

  28. Bitcoin's 2026 low

    Bitcoin falls to $57,748 (CoinMarketCap daily low), its lowest since 2024 and about 54% below its October 2025 record. Ether's 2026 low is $1,506.51 on 6 June.[5][6][611]

  29. Strategy sells bitcoin

    Strategy, the largest company holder, sells 3,588 BTC for about $216 million at roughly $60,000 each to fund preferred-stock dividends, leaving 843,775 BTC. Its first sale since 2022, 32 BTC in late May, came weeks earlier.[612][613]

  30. Bank of Thailand screens USDT trades

    Bank of Thailand Governor Vitai Ratanakorn says the bank is screening abnormally large stablecoin trades, mainly Tether's USDT, as part of a crackdown on the grey economy, and passes findings to the SEC.[614]

  31. Stablecoin supply shrinks

    Dollar stablecoin supply falls for the first time in four years after peaking at $320.9 billion on 17 May 2026 (DefiLlama), while June 2026 stablecoin volume hits a record $1.79 trillion.[586][588]

  32. Coldcard seed-phrase flaw drained

    At least a dozen attackers drain over $130 million from Coldcard hardware wallets, exploiting a flaw from 2021 in Coinkite's code that made seed phrases predictable. Offline devices are among those drained.[615]

  33. SEC proposes Regulation Crypto Assets

    The SEC proposes Regulation Crypto Assets: two offering exemptions, capped at $5 million over four years and $75 million per 12 months, plus a safe harbor for when a token sold under an investment contract leaves SEC oversight.[616]

  34. Biggest bitcoin rally since 2023

    Bitcoin gains more than 20% in three days, its largest three-day rise since 2023, as about $2.7 billion of short positions are liquidated; spot bitcoin ETFs take in about $1.6 billion the week before. reported[617]

  35. Thai SEC proposes stablecoin transfer cap

    The Thai SEC board approves consultation principles for stablecoins: transfers through licensed firms only to or from the customer's own verified wallets, and a cap of 5 million baht per person, per operator, per day each way. Comments close 25 September 2026. reported[13]

  36. CLARITY Act fails in the Senate

    A Senate cloture vote on the CLARITY market-structure bill fails 49-50, short of the 60 needed; the dispute is over ethics limits on officials' crypto business ties. The bill passed the House 294-134 in July 2025 and the Senate Banking Committee 15-9 on 14 May 2026.[8][9]

  37. Where prices stand

    Bitcoin closes at $86,172 (CoinMarketCap), about 32% below its October 2025 record and 1.5% below its 2025 close of $87,509. Ether closes at $2,752.63, about 44% below its August 2025 record.[5][6][7]
